Hotel or Riads…we prefer Riads tending to favour the smaller boutique Riad style as it offers a more authentic Moroccan experience. The style of a Moroccan Riad is the central courtyard and interior facing windows. The thinking behind opening windows on to a courtyard and garden was to garner privacy for women. Even now many village houses have few windows to the outside. Most Riads for guests are effectively hotels but with attention paid to authentic Moroccan decoration. One of these tools is the much favoured polished plaster, tadelakt, a virtually waterproof lime based plaster which is mixed with a colour of choice. You’ll see it in most Moroccan Riads and it’s a wonderful departure from the usual tiling.
